Integrating Psychophysiological Measures of Cognitive Workload and Eye Movements to Detect Strategy Shifts
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents a case study to introduce a new technique for identifying and comparing cognitive strategies. The technique integrates eye movements with the Index of Cognitive Activity, a psychophysiological measurement of cognitive workload derived from changes in pupil dilation. The first part of the paper describes the technique and its constituent elements. The second part describes the task used in this study. The task has been used extensively in previous studies with electrophysiological recordings of EEG, EOG, and EMG and is know to elicit different levels of cognitive workload. The third part of the paper shows the results and provides detail about three separate strategies that emerged in the subject’s performance. The strategies are first identified from differences in the Index of Cognitive Activity and corroborated through detailed analyses of the participant’s eye movements as he performed the task.

The Impact of Eye Movements and Cognitive Workload on Lateral Position Variability in Driving
OBJECTIVE The objective of this work was to understand the relationship between eye movements and cognitive workload in maintaining lane position while driving. BACKGROUND Recent findings in driving research have found that, paradoxically, increases in cognitive workload decrease lateral position variability. If people drive where they look and drivers look more centrally with increased cogni...

Mental workload is an important concept and has been proven to be a precursor to situation awareness and operative performance. This thesis describes methods to measure mental workload through self-ratings and psychophysiological measurements. Similarities and differences in psychophysiological reactions and rated mental workload between simulated and real flights are described. The consequence...

متن کاملThe Effects of Heart Rate Variability on Reading Performance among Iranian EFL Learners
Psychophysiological studies and MRI neuro-imaging findings provide evidence that heart rate variability (HRV) which is in control of our emotions affects our brain cognitive centers. It has been shown that coherent heart-brain interaction can change the pattern of the afferent cardiac input that is sent to the brain. For this purpose, the Institute of HeartMath (IHM) has proposed a kind of biof...
